Pitcher/ Gong Dao Bei of beautiful, gentle form, richly colored by natural ash glaze with magnificent flowing patterns shaped by the flame.
This piece was fired in the front row of the first firing after the kiln’s rebuilding, where it received the strongest effects of heat and wood ash, as seen in the kiln interior photo in the follwoing blog.

As seen in the photo below, this pitcher was placed behind the vase in the kiln. Ash carried by the currents of flame passed between the vases and settled onto the pitcher’s surface.

The patterns of natural ash glaze are the result of the artist’s anticipation—taking the flow of the flames into consideration together with the forces of nature: the kiln’s heat and ash. They were created in a quiet harmony between the artist’s intention and the work of nature.

Shinohara Takashi's kiln collapsed in the major earthquake of January 1, 2024, and was later damaged by flooding before finally being rebuilt in October 2025. Firing in a first kiln is always unpredictable, yet Mr. Shinohara achieved a work of exceptional beauty—a truly commemorative piece.
