This cup was made as a traditional sencha-wan (煎茶碗). In Japan, however, the term *sencha-wan* means more than simply a cup for drinking sencha tea. It generally refers to a small, delicate, high-quality tea cup of the kind used in the practice of sencha-dō, the Japanese sencha tea ceremony. 

A sencha-wan is intended for serving fine tea to guests in a beautiful vessel, bringing a sense of refinement and quality to a tea gathering. This particular cup has that refined quality and is especially distinctive because it comes with both a lid and a matching saucer. Pieces like this are not commonly seen in modern Japan.
