Umuhara Sokou’s Large Pear-Skin-Textured Teapot

This exquisite teapot has a beautifully rounded, full-bodied silhouette with a pleasing sense of tension, yet its walls are remarkably thin. Subtle shades of brown—reminiscent of a cast-iron teapot—emerge naturally during firing. These colors are born from a delicate interplay between the unpredictable flames of the kiln and the artist’s intention—half shaped by nature, half guided by the artist’s vision.

Its short, charming spout evokes the traditional forms and cultural heritage of senchadō, the Japanese art of sencha tea. The finely textured, pear-skin-like surface further enhances its quiet wabi-sabi beauty.

Despite its generous size, the teapot weighs just 144 grams. It also features a large, meticulously hand-punched tea strainer.

This exceptional harmony of lightness, functionality, and a distinctive beauty that blends elegance, tradition, and contemporary style could only have been created through Sokou’s outstanding technical mastery, years of experience, and singular aesthetic vision. The handle’s organic, naturally formed shape evokes a sense of wabi-sabi, while its remarkable thinness reveals the delicacy and precision of Sokou’s craftsmanship.
