Story of Old and Now
(Written April 2025)
Suzu Pottery (Suzuyaki) from Suzu City, Ishikawa, Japan
Suzuyaki is pottery made in Suzu City, located at the tip of the Noto Peninsula in Japan.
The land here is known for its strong connection to nature, and Suzu ware reflects this harmony with the environment.
Suzuyaki has been made in Japan for centuries, but it disappeared about 500 years ago. It was revived around 50 years ago, keeping the traditional black color and beautiful curves.
In recent years, repeated earthquakes have damaged or destroyed the kilns of many Suzu ware artists. This teapot was made by Takashi Shinohara before the earthquake in January 2024.
The town of Suzu was badly affected, with many homes collapsing and infrastructure being destroyed. Recovery is still ongoing.
However, Takashi Shinohara hopes people will come to Suzu. He wants visitors to see the town and talk to people in Suzu. He believes that the people of Suzu want to be heard and also want to learn more about what people around the world are feeling.
Takashi Shinohara plans to rebuild his kiln between spring and summer this year. After that, new works are expected to be completed by the end of 2025 or into 2026.
