Sendai Tansu is a traditional Japanese chest of drawers made mainly in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. It developed from the Edo to Meiji periods and remains highly valued as a traditional craft. Under the patronage of the samurai lord Date Masamune, Sendai’s woodworking and metalworking flourished, giving rise to chests that reflect the dignified spirit of the samurai.

Made primarily from zelkova (keyaki) or cedar (sugi) wood, Sendai Tansu is renowned for its luxurious metal fittings, handcrafted by blacksmiths. These fittings often feature auspicious designs such as arabesque patterns, cranes and turtles, pine, bamboo, and plum motifs, creating a bold and elegant appearance.
