"The Orchid Pavilion"

"The Orchid Pavilion" (兰亭曲水, Lan Ting Qu Shui) depicts a scene of mountains, streams, people, and pavilions in nature from ancient China (A.D. 353). It expresses literary and cultural themes. "Lan Ting" means "The Orchid Pavilion," with "Ting" referring to a pavilion with pillars and a roof. "Qu Shui" means "winding stream."

This scene shows Chinese intellectuals gathering together to compose poetry.

Japan has absorbed Chinese culture since ancient times, especially in literature and calligraphy. Thus, "The Orchid Pavilion" is closely related to the roots of Japanese literature.

In this art, you can see Kodo Yoshikawa’s intricate carving techniques. Enjoy the details in the depiction of trees, rocks, mountains, and calligraphy. Kodo's carving technique has been recognized as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan.
