SHORYU Oil Drop Pink & Yellow Gold Brocade Lid Kyusu Teapot 昭龍油滴 SR01

This elegant and noble Japanese handmade teapot features a beautiful lid.

The body is crafted in carbon black with an oil drop pattern, giving it a delicate shine. The black color is achieved through reduction firing with rice hulls in the kiln, resulting in a smoked appearance.

Pure gold is meticulously applied to the lid knob, enhancing the teapot's appearance and accentuating the beauty of the black body.

Following the initial firing, a glaze is applied to the surface before undergoing another round of firing with reduction, transforming the teapot into its distinctive black hue. The application of pure gold to the surface of lid knob follows, adding to its allure.

Originally made from red clay, traces of which can be seen on the inner side of the lid, left unsmoked.

Creating the beautiful oil drop pattern was no easy feat, as Shoryu explains. It took several years of experimentation to consistently achieve the desired result, with factors such as weather and seasonal changes affecting the process.

The surface is glazed, providing a smooth and natural texture, while the interior remains unglazed to allow the tea and water to interact with the clay, enhancing the taste of the brewed tea.

Despite its delicate appearance, this teapot is relatively lightweight, with a thin body.
