Mitsuru Yamashita is a Maki-e artist from Wajima, Japan, a region renowned for its lacquerware.

This lacquered Natsume wa crafted over 30 years ago, features a delicate, glowing orange hue, setting it apart from traditional black or red lacquer. The lid is adorned with an imaginary creature from both Japanese and Chinese traditions, the Kirin, while the body showcases beautiful arabesque patterns and intricate designs. The beveled edges of the lid, with their jewel-like radiance and gold embellishments, beautifully enhance and harmonize with the lid's decoration and the design of the body.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique in which patterns are painted on lacquerware using a fine brush and sprinkled with gold, silver, or other metallic powders before the lacquer hardens. This intricate art form requires exceptional skill and precision, with artisans dedicating years to mastering the craft.
