Although Koshin passed away in 2024, he left an important contribution to the history of Japanese tea culture through his art and craftsmanship.

The Marble Pattern Comes from Seaweed

The marble pattern comes from seaweed.

The seaweed is from the sea around the Chita Peninsula, where Tokoname City is located.

This Teapot Was Fired Three Times

1. First, a red clay teapot was made and fired.
2. Seaweed was tied around the teapot, and it was fired again to create the marble pattern.
3. It was then reduction-fired (smoked), changing the color to black and red marble.

The red and black colors are very harmonious.

The overall impression is glorious, traditional, and dignified.

Effect of Smoked Red Clay

The body looks dark brown in low light.

In stronger light, it looks reddish brown.

The teapot shows a different appearance depending on the light it receives.

When red clay is smoked and turns black, the color has depth and a feeling of layers.

Three Different Textures in One Teapot

1. Lid and handle
The lid and handle are well polished. They look like real marble and are shiny and smooth.

2. Body
The body has a texture like fine sand.

In Japan, this texture is called “Pine Tree Peel.”

The artist made it feel like an iron teapot.

3. Foot part
The foot part has a smooth texture.

When you hold this teapot, you may feel as if you are holding an iron teapot.
