A Place to Slow Down and Experience Traditional Japanese Culture

For customers who have an interest in Japanese culture, I would like to introduce a destination that I believe you may truly enjoy.

It is only about an hour from Tokyo by the Joetsu Shinkansen to Echigo-Yuzawa Station, where pickup service to the hotel is available.

The place I visited was ryugon, an hotel located in Minamiuonuma, Niigata Prefecture. What makes this place special is the opportunity it offers to slow down and experience a more restorative pace of life.

The buildings incorporate farmhouses that once belonged to prominent farming families in the region and were later relocated here. The depth and character of the aged wood reflect the passage of time, allowing visitors to experience the simple yet warm aesthetic of traditional Japanese life.

Outside the windows stretches a landscape of greenery, as though the buildings were part of the surrounding forest. Moss-covered stones and small creatures around the water can all be observed from a gentle and comfortable distance.

I spent some time on a comfortable box sofa, reading books on historical tea ceramics from the bookshelves there and enjoying unhurried moments.

Just as tea lovers prepare tea in a favorite vessel and quietly immerse themselves in an inner world, I felt that the spaces at ryugon naturally guide visitors toward a similar experience.

The food was equally memorable. Meals are prepared with local ingredients and express the food culture of the region.

This area is surrounded by mountains and receives heavy snowfall throughout the winter. People developed unique methods of food preservation and a distinctive culinary culture.

Because I visited in spring, I was able to enjoy a variety of wild mountain vegetables, which gave me a deeper appreciation for the region and its seasonal traditions.

Walking through the buildings. Sitting quietly in a tatami room. Looking at the calligraphy displayed on the walls. Spending time outdoors in the garden. A sense of stillness gradually settles in.

The staff were warm and attentive, and the entire property felt thoughtfully designed as a place for rest.

If you ever have the opportunity, ryugon may be worth considering. Bringing along your favorite tea may add another layer of comfort to the experience.
