Chasen (Tea wisk)

Made in Takayama, Nara Japan/ 80-prong

What is Takayama Chasen?

The Takayama chasen (tea whisk) is crafted in Takayama Town, Nara Prefecture. For us Japanese, "Takayama chasen" is recognized as a brand synonymous with high quality.

Type of Chasen

The number of prongs on a chasen (bamboo tea whisk) ranges from 16 to 120, depending on the type of tea being prepared. For usucha (thin tea), which is the type of matcha commonly enjoyed in daily life (as opposed to koicha, or thick tea), the most frequently used are the 80-prong, and 100-prong chasen.

Reccomendation 80-prong and100-prong

Please watch the following video to see how a chasen (bamboo tea whisk) is made. As shown in the video, the prongs of an 80-prong chasen are thicker compared to those of a 100-prong chasen, which makes it slightly more durable. On the other hand, the 100-prong chasen is possible to produce slightly finer, smoother foam. In terms of well balance of durability, flexibility, ease of use, and the ability to create beautiful foam, both the 80-prong and 100-prong are good choices for Usucha (thin tea).
