This is an elegant and refined Japanese handmade black teapot, crafted with a beautifully finished lid.

The body is deep carbon black, adorned with a delicate oil-drop pattern that shines subtly. The rich black color is created through reduction firing with rice hulls in the kiln, giving it a smoked finish.

The lid knob is accented with pure gold, adding a touch of luxury. The brilliance of the gold enhances the beauty of the black body, creating a striking contrast.

The process begins with red clay, fired once to form a red teapot. After applying glaze, it is fired again, then reduction-fired (smoked) to become a black teapot. Finally, pure gold is applied to the lid knob and it is fired once more.

Inside the lid, you can still see the original red clay, as it was not smoked.

Achieving a beautiful oil-drop pattern was not easy, says Shoryu, the artist. He spent years perfecting his technique, as changes in weather and seasonal conditions—such as temperature and humidity—affect how the pattern emerges.

The surface of the teapot is glazed, giving it a smooth and natural texture, while the interior is unglazed, allowing tea and water to interact directly with the clay—enhancing the flavor of the tea.

Lightweight and relatively thin-walled, this teapot is easy to handle. It is excellent for brewing all kinds of tea, but is especially praised for enhancing the taste of green tea and white tea.
