Antique Subfossil Wood Coaster Set Ancient buried wood

Buried wood: This coaster was made of trees that were buried around 5 million years ago and became fossilized through carbonization.  

Buried wood is known for its unique color, texture, and beautiful grain, making it a rare and valuable material for traditional Japanese crafts.

Buried wood is a traditional craft from Sendai. It was discovered around 200 years ago during the Edo period and was initially used to create items like plates. Over time, the collection of buried wood became widespread, but by the 1950s, the extraction ceased. Today, there are few artisans remaining, and they continue the craft using materials they gathered decades ago.

This tea coaster was made around 50 years ago. It is a small and elegant piece, beautifully crafted for use in tea ceremonies.
