Nara Ittō-bori is a traditional wood carving technique from Nara, characterized by the following features:

  1. One-knife Technique: The carving is done with a single blade, creating a unique texture and three-dimensionality in the work.

  2. Bold, broad facets — Unique and distinctive carving

  3. Use of Wood: Primarily made from materials like cypress and cedar, the wood's natural grain and texture are emphasized in the carvings.

The origin of Nara Ittō-bori lies in wooden figures offered to the gods (Shrine). To express purity and avoid excessive human intervention, the carvings were intentionally kept simple.
